Sphinx is a mild backbend you can practice in yin style (held for 2 to 5 minutes) or in yang style for a few conscious breaths, resting and then repeating. The easeful spinal extension with the support of the floor safely stimulates the bones of the back and opens the chest and lungs to increase breathing capacity. If you have spinal disc conditions or other issues, check with your health care provider to make sure spinal extension movements (backbends) are okay for you.
